Well, it's National Mural Day, and what better way to celebrate that than with Danielle Cleary.

She is from Heartspace Art.

She's a local artist using creativity to uplift and connect communities through powerful, one-of-a-kind murals.

Danielle Cleary:

Thank you so much for having me.

Jasmine Monroe:

Well, I know that this is a very special day for you all.

I wanna tell the folks at home, when you are driving, make sure you keep your hands 10 to 2. Right?

But these murals are so captivating when you see them going by.

You see your murals everywhere.

Tell me all about how you got started.

Danielle Cleary:

Well, my husband and I met at an art event, and he told me he wanted murals first.

And so that's kinda how things got rolling, and that was over a decade ago.

We started Heartspace Art in 2018, and now we just really love painting murals all over Jacksonville to beautify and uplift the community.

We feel like art really touches people in a way that—like music, you know?

Jasmine Monroe:

It really does.

And even taking a look at this one, tell me all about what we're seeing right behind us.

This mural stands out—one of the best murals that you guys do, especially in and around town.

Danielle Cleary:

Yeah.

So this project is with the Department of Health, and it's in their hallway, where the lower-income community comes in to get their vaccines and see doctors, if they can’t afford their own healthcare and things of this nature.

We worked closely with the Department of Health to represent them in the way that reflects the people who visit this area.

We really wanted to showcase their mission—the words, the responsiveness, and everything they represent there.

And so I feel like we did it. I'm very proud of this project.

Jasmine Monroe:

And every one is different.

So when you're going into these projects, you have these meetings.

What is it that people need to know when it comes to seeing murals and how to appreciate them?

Danielle Cleary:

Right.

So every project is like our baby, and we really want to make sure that we are sharing the message of our client or bringing in that energy that really represents how they want their people to feel—whether it's in their home or in an establishment like this.

Jasmine Monroe:

I always ask the artist, what is your favorite piece?

What is your favorite type of art to do?

I know it's like putting you on the spot, but what do you think—or I should say, what was the hardest project you’ve accomplished, and you were like, “Wow, I can’t believe we really finished that”?

Danielle Cleary:

I would say our project with Gateway Jax.

It's downtown, right when you're going into Springfield.

They had a tight timeline and a large, large project.

So I would say that was the most challenging in the way that we really had to pull resources.

Not only do we have our own team, we also subcontracted other local muralists.

We’ve worked with about 12 to 15 local muralists over the time that we work on these projects sometimes.

Jasmine Monroe:

You mention that you have a lot of help too.

It’s not just you and your husband.

How do you go about finding the next big artist in Jacksonville?

Danielle Cleary:

Oh my gosh. That’s a great question.

So all of our artists are either from Douglas Anderson—we have a relationship with the school—

And then several of our artists are UNF graduates.

We also work with the university to give artists an opportunity to have their dream job: to paint.

Not everybody wants to run a business.

A lot of artists don’t know how to do that or don’t know where to start, and so we really can give them that platform to stand on.

Jasmine Monroe:

I like to say artists, you know, they don’t like the cut and dry. Right?

They want their freedom.

So I do love that when you get a chance to see this artwork, it is completely, you know, mind-blowing, and it's amazing.

So thank you so much.

Because I know you're just, like, fully engulfed in it sometimes, but sit back and look at what you’ve done.

Flagler Health+ opens mental health center in St. Johns County

Flagler CEO: ‘We have seen that there is a need to provide a less traumatic entry point for those who need mental health services’

People experiencing a mental health crisis can bypass the emergency room at Flagler Hospital and instead opt for the new CAIR Center.

The Crisis Assessment Intervention and Referral Center offers mental and behavioral health services to both youth and adults in a more peaceful setting, Flagler Health+ officials said.

The goals of the CAIR Center include reducing “unnecessary Baker Act admissions” and helping people avoid the criminal justice system, as well as reducing recurring hospital visits “while providing those in mental health crisis a supportive and approachable environment to receive support,” according to a news release from Flagler Health+.

The center has been operating for several weeks, but Flagler Health+ officials celebrated the opening with a ribbon cutting on Thursday morning at the center at 300 Health Park Blvd., Suite 1008. Officials invited media and others to take a tour.

At the ribbon-cutting, Flagler Health+ CEO Carlton DeVooght said the center helps fill a gap in coverage in the community. He said that many people don’t get the care they need because of a lack of mental and behavioral health services in Florida.

“In working with our partners like (EPIC Behavioral Healthcare and St. Augustine Youth Services), we have seen that there is a need to provide a less traumatic entry point for those who need mental health services,” DeVooght said.

An open house for the general public is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on June 19. People can learn more about the center at flaglerhealth.org/CAIR or by calling 904-707-6462.

In addition to providing crisis assessment and interventions, the center provides referrals and help establishing long-term connections with providers, according to Flagler Health+. The center also helps connect people with other resources they might need.

“Often, the mental health struggle is tied to other needs in the household ― food insecurity, lack of stable housing, difficulties obtaining prescriptions, and more,” according to the release. “The CAIR Center then utilizes Care Connect+, a program established by Flagler Health+, to connect patients to other critical resources. Care Connect then helps clients navigate the process to clarify questions, remove barriers, and connect the patient to social health services, as needed.”

People do not need to have insurance to get help from the CAIR Center, said Valerie Duquette, who is in charge of the Flagler Health+ Behavioral Health Department.

“That is not a factor for us,” she said. “We are not concerned about a payer source. We’re here to provide a service to the community.”

Flagler Health+ Chief Operating Officer Vincent Johnson said about 1 in 5 Americans will have a diagnosable mental health condition this year, a statistic provided by the nonprofit Mental Health America. He called the center “a huge boon” for the community.

“It’s an opportunity to take care of people who otherwise would not be taken care of,” he said. “And there’s never been more of a time and more of a need for mental health care to be at the forefront and the center of everything that we do for our community.”

The state of Florida’s budget includes about $8 million for the CAIR Center, DeVooght said.

People who go to the ER for a mental health concern can be met with more stress.

“You have people moving in and out,” Duquette said. “Various levels of trauma. Various levels of injury and illness. A lot of commotion. A lot of noise. A lot of stimulation. And that can be overwhelming for folks.”

She added, “This place allows people who are not in need of those hospitalization-type services to be able to come and have a different environment. It’s more calm. It’s relaxed. It’s inviting. There isn’t all of that additional stimulation.”

The center has separate areas for youth and adults. The staff includes three therapists and three intake workers, as well staff to help with reception and care coordination, Duquette said. The center plans to add psychiatrists.

The center is for outpatient services, so there are no beds. If people need hospitalization, the CAIR Center team works with the emergency room to transfer adults there, Duquette said. If minors need hospitalization or more help than can be provided by the CAIR Center, the team works to coordinate their care with St. Augustine Youth Services or to transfer them to a Jacksonville facility.

People are also using the CAIR Center for regular counseling sessions, Duquette said.

“We’re here right now Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” Duquette said. “You can walk in. You can call us. You can find information on our website about us and how to reach us. You can show up. … We want you to come, and we’re going to be expanding that hopefully by the end of the year to at least to weekends and possibly into our 24/7 operation.”

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle and Ian Cleary.

Hi Danielle and Ian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Heartspace Art creates murals with a message; influential art that is positive & inspirational. Our desire is to inspire hope in our hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, and then travel worldwide, sharing a message of love, connection, and personal empowerment. We refer to this as the Conscious Heart Movement– a belief that choices should be guided by the wisdom of the heart in order to create harmony among all beings. The heart reveals the oneness of life. Heartspace Art practices this movement in the creation of Conscious Art.

Heartspace Art began as a love story at an event called the Purple Hatter’s Ball. Purple Hatter’s Ball was a small loved music festival housed by the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. That is where Danielle and I met and it feels now like it was destiny. Danielle attended the event as a workshop facilitator and taught classes on the creation and benefits of mandalas. I had been invited to participate as a live painter with a crew assembled by the veteran artist Bean Spence. Danielle and I were already accomplished, artists. Danielle had gained a reputation in her hometown of Jacksonville for her large-scale chalk murals and chalk mandalas created in the street. I had also gained recognition for my artistic skill having received awards for my Activist Cartoons published in the newspaper as well as my studio paintings.

Later that year and for several years to come Danielle and I traveled together participating in art adventures and festivals where we created many different art experiences. We body painted flow artists, acrobats, and yogis with the amazing Kreaturez founded by Nora Morales. We created installations with Eclectic Electric owned by Tyler Pace Hale. We also created many other installations and artworks at events such as Hulaween, Jacksonville’s Art walks, the New Orleans Women’s March, Orange Blossom Jamboree, Imagine, Okeechobee Music Festival, Kinnection, Love Burn, Pass the Good, and Zen Awakening.

We have even had the opportunity to create art in Hawaii and Internationally in Spain and Costa Rica. The experience of creating in all of these ways and in all of these places has been simultaneously empowering and humbling; it required us to let go of attachment to our art. Our art was always temporary, the murals we would build and paint would be taken down after the weekend, the people we painted would remove our art after their performances, and the chalk murals were gone normally after the first rain; which sometimes occurred as soon as they were completed.

In 2017, Danielle and I married and joined our lives in an epic journey and mission to spread love and hope with our art, the idea of Heartspace had already been present in our awareness, but we really began to take it seriously and started going by the name. We also began to focus our years of art experience in Jacksonville, our hometown, in order to better serve our community and North Florida. I see murals and public art as the epitome of artistic expression, it feels like art with a purpose, it is an art as a service. Our movement towards being mural-focused has been gradual as we gained the skills and confidence for the undertaking of large-scale art. Now, we offer the skills and the vision to take on a project of any size!

Ian Cleary:

My expression, my work, is a spiritual experience. I am a seeker, exploring my inner verse for visions of truth and unity. I believe in spiritual truths that are beyond our intellect. My work is designed to create an experience in which people feel aware of cosmic unity and their own potential for greatness. The imagery of my work uses ancient symbols and archetypes to illuminate a path for human evolution. My stories illustrate human triumph, happiness, and symbiosis with nature. I create art to serve my community, to inspire, to spread hope, and to participate in the ever-creating cycle of life.

I was born in Mississippi and graduated from the University of Mississippi with a BA in Studio Art. I currently reside in Jacksonville, Florida with my wife and two children. I have been a practicing professional artist for ten years, and I specialize in paint and chalk murals, as well as, graphic design. I am a creator, an activist, and a storyteller. I am a dreamer, a visionary, inspired to create a better world for all beings. I have traveled around the world painting on everything from walls to bodies.

I have held positions over the years as a muralist, political newspaper cartoonist, live performance festival painter, body artist, gallery manager, and art teacher. I even served as an AmeriCorps team lead for the Florida Conservation Corp; which offered me opportunities to be a leader and serve our country in the preservation of natural lands. I believe in giving back to the community and a portion of my work has always been donated to charity. Today, I am grateful for the opportunity to practice my art full-time, and I look forward to the possibility of creating with you!

Danielle Cleary:

I was born an artist and creation constantly flow out of me from my heart space. I believe that art is a trail of our existence. I sometimes leave myself and become one with the art piece. I learn through the freedom of self-expression. I am a native of Jacksonville, Florida and so are the two generations before me. I have watched Jacksonville grow from a relatively quiet city into a desired destination to live and visit. I attribute much of that to the city’s commitment to art and culture and am proud to call it home for myself, my husband, and two children.

I am a strong, self-made woman who has studied under some of the best in the industry. I began my career creating brightly colored, detailed drawings using sharpies and pens. The next medium I incorporated into my work was chalk. It allowed me to express myself creatively on streets and a variety of outdoor surfaces for clients that were interested in temporary expressions.

Knowing that my work may only last until the first rain permitted me to begin my inward journey of being liberated from attachments to objects on the material plane. As I dove a little deeper, I discovered my appreciation for the meditative ways of the Tibetan sand mandalas and began including mandalas regularly in my work. I attribute my early success to participating in the local, Downtown Artwalk events where I was able to sell my paintings, drawings, and create on a larger scale as a chalk muralist.

My next artistic adventure took me on the road performing transformational art for a variety of events. In 2016, I began the art of body painting with Nora Morals of Kreaturez. I traveled throughout the United States as far as Hawaii body painting for festival performers and private clients. I also had the opportunity to teach my trade and help with big event planning. I also met a very special artist during my travels who would change my life forever! His name is Ian Cleary and we are now married and have a child of our own.

In 2017, I co-founded Heartspace432 with my husband. We created the company so that we could teach art, practice art, and produce art-centric events. Upon founding the company, we added painted murals to our repertoire and some of our clients include Winn Dixie, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Gator Bowl, Downtown Vision – Art Walk, Riverside Arts Market, Suwannee Hulaween Festival, Purple Hatter Ball, Earth Dance, and Southlight Gallery.

In 2019, I became certified as a Therapeutic Art Life Coach and incorporated teaching art as a form of healing. I love people, and especially holding space for them to heal past wounds so that they can become the best versions of themselves. I also enjoy helping my community be its best, and believe volunteering my talents is an important part of connecting. Being a part of positive change inspires me to be a better person, and I constantly strive to evolve.

In 2020, we re-branded and changed our name from Heartspace432 to Heartspace Art to focus on temporary and permanent murals. I love creating art for a living with my husband no matter the medium. Our art always comes with a message, and my hope continues to be that we can reach other people’s hearts globally through our art. I look forward to meeting you and discussing how we can transform your space into something magnificent!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For me, the largest struggle in pursuing my dream has been the confidence to continue on the art path and learning how to receive the value of what I create, Danielle says she has experienced the same.

We are breaking the social blockages within people’s minds about what art is and how it should be valued, especially in a monetary sense. Our future culture will fully embrace the emotional aspects of our being and recognize that art plays a vital role in our health as individuals and societies.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I believe our greatest strength as individuals and as a company is the alignment of our values in our work and in our lives. We are known for our integrity and our creative vision. Our art is so much more than visual representation, it is a lifestyle in which we take a holistic approach to life, business, and the creative process.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
We think it is valuable to know that your dream will not unfold overnight, have patience in your process.

The evolution of our business has taken years and much of what we have accomplished as a business was proceeded by intentional work as individuals. We worked on ourselves first, our results are a reflection of our internal journey.

It is also valuable to take bold, confident steps towards your dreams. There have been so many opportunities to quit or to take an easier path, but we continue to make choices that move us closer to our goals.

Many might recognize Danielle and Ian Cleary from Riverside Arts Market or as the local artists who paint murals around town. They are known for their creative brushstrokes. But they have green thumbs and free spirits as well.

The Clearys are avid gardeners. They grow edibles—squash, tomatoes, onions. They also have three loquat trees, three avocado trees, and an elderberry bush in their yard. They are raising these crops in Avondale. And there they raise children, too.

Danielle has a son, Dee. Together, she and Ian have a daughter, Oceana, and they are expecting a third child in December.

The Clearys are into the local scene. “We love the parks,” Ian said. They can often be found at Boone Park in Avondale or Memorial Park in Riverside. They contributed toward the tree planting at Willowbranch. Danielle, a third generation native of Jacksonville, and Ian, Mississippi-born, do not let city or state boundaries stop them though.

“When we are not home tending to all of our beings, we like to travel,” Danielle said. Every summer, sometimes with the children’s friends tagging along, the family floats down the spring-fed river at Ichetucknee Springs State Park in Fort White.

When Danielle was 30 weeks pregnant with their daughter, she had a dream that she had given birth on the Hawaiian island of Kauai; so, she and Ian went on a birth journey. They sold all of their possessions and moved there for a time. “I had no doula, no clue what I was doing. And every single piece of the puzzle was supported. We had a beautiful, all-natural birth,” Danielle said. The couple relied on the Universe to provide everything they needed. They lived in various places when they arrived and were even homeless up until five days before Oceana was born. Danielle began having contractions on a friend’s couch. “I feel like Mary and Joseph looking for a stable. This is crazy,” Danielle had told Ian at the time. It was a testament of trust, though there were scary moments along the way.

Danielle and Ian value family togetherness, but they also appreciate individual time apart. “We think it’s really important to have ourselves and each other. That’s important to our personal and our couple goals,” Danielle said.

When Oceana was a baby and still breastfeeding, Danielle took her on a spiritual journey. They lived for two months at The Hostel in the Forest in Brunswick, Georgia while Ian and Dee stayed home. The Hostel is a retreat environment with huts and treehouses and composting toilets, a place where electronics are off limits. There, it was easy for Danielle to get in tune with nature.

Last spring, Ian took a trip to Arizona. “For me, it was a voyage of self-discovery,” he said. It was the first trip he’d taken without Danielle since the two met and started making art together six years ago. He travelled with a group of guys who were filming a music video for local musician Kyle Piety a/k/a Bit Deff. After filming, Ian and Kyle left the group and went to nearby Sedona, a world-renowned healing spot of vortexes. There, Ian met a medicine woman and a Native American elder.

Danielle and Ian Cleary are truly an eclectic couple, a blend of hometown values and free-spirited adventure.

Cultural Council’s 45th Art Awards

Heartspace Art has been nominated for multiple awards at the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville’s 45th annual Art Awards!

The awards Heartspace has been nominated for include:

Robert Arleigh White Award for Advocacy – This award, named after a former executive director of the
Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, honors an individual who has educated the general public,
business leaders, and elected officials about the intrinsic and economic value of the arts and culture.

The Art of Giving Award – This award seeks to inspire a culture of giving by recognizing an outstanding
philanthropist who has graciously helped fund, support, or sustain arts and cultural programs and
organizations in our community.

People’s Choice Award -This award honors an individual or organization that the community feels has
impacted them the most.

In response to the nomination Heartspace submitted a short synopsis of our recent events and projects. What follows it the provided response.

Heartspace Art creates murals with a message; influential art that is positive & inspirational. Their desire is to inspire hope in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, and then travel worldwide, sharing their message of love, connection, and personal empowerment. They refer to this as the Conscious Heart Movement– a belief that choices should be guided by the wisdom of the heart in order to create harmony among all beings. The heart reveals the oneness of life. Heartspace Art practices this movement in the creation of Conscious Art.

Recently, Heartspace Art has worked with non-profits, businesses, and even independently to create messages of hope for the community of Jacksonville, Florida.

In 2020 Heartspace Art created a mural saluting our front-line heroes who have risked everything during the Covid-19 pandemic. Next, Heartspace Art created a huge chalk mural encouraging teachers with the message, “we love our teachers;” as they returned to school post pandemic shutdown. Heartspace Art also created a mural, “Hope for positive change,” that represented the injustice of police brutality and inspired hope for a future that is peaceful and has equal opportunity for all beings.

At the end of 2020 Heartspace Art, in collaboration with the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, created a mural entitled “Stand True.” The mural/large scale painting represented the strength of LGBTQ individuals who have fought for equality and their courage in being their authentic selves. A portion of the murals proceeds were donated to the Cultural Council and the UNF LGBTQ resource center and ultimately the mural itself was given to the UNF LGBTQ resource center.

In 2021 Heartspace Art participated in Art in the Park at James Weldon Johnson Park where Ian Cleary created a mural with the message, “Every Voice.” The piece was a tribute to James Weldon Johnson and all of those who have devoted themselves to the movement for equality.

Also in 2021 Heartspace Art donated a mural to the Murray Hill community and created the piece with recycled paint. The mural entitled “Seeds of Sunshine,” depicts three sun lit sunflowers and represents being accepted and encouraged by ones family and community in being who you are; discovering your destiny. The mural was featured on the front page of The Resident newspaper in an article entitled, “Inspired by a Zest for Life.”

At the core of Heartspace Art is the belief that life is our most precious gift. Our art honors life and encourages others to find a renewed sense of value for their own lives and every life.

Art Restoration

Art from the past can express more than just an emotion to its viewers. It can give insight to religious perspectives, the common way of life, or elaborate specific events, fantasies, or ideas at the time it was painted. Technology, science, and preservation methods were not nearly as advanced as the present era, leaving artists to have made several mistakes when they assembled their painting blind to the natural damage it will accumulate over the years. Prime examples of this damage can be air bubbles under the painting, cracks, tears/scrapes from handling, color loss, and surface grime. Art restoration does not consist of changing/improving the art based on the restorer’s opinion. Despite the stereotype, it is returning the art piece as close as physically possible to its original form while following the artist’s desires and methods of painting. Heartspace Art founders Ian and Danielle Cleary have painted a new mural, a mural with a message.

Their latest work of inspiring art can be found on a wooden slat fence in Murray Hill. The scene is of three sunflowers popping out of clouds, reaching for the sky. Danielle likens it to a metaphor for life, offering encouragement and a message of confidence. “Reach high. It’s closer than you think,” she said.

Underneath the sunflower mural, the couple painted the words “Love Life” so that there’s intention behind it. “We wanted that energy to vibrate out of that painting,” Danielle said.

The fence is located on the side of the Murray Hillbilly Restaurant. It was erected to make a private, outdoor eating area for patrons and to partition space for sound healing gatherings.

Heartspace Art partners with people who host community events. They’re currently working with Riverside Arts Market (RAM), and Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) is also involved. On February 6th at RAM, folks had the opportunity to be part of a collaborative mural, a project funded by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville. Danielle and Ian had mapped out huge coloring pages on two wooden panels that community members could paint on. One is the image of the sun shining on the downtown skyline. Bold lettering spells out, “Shine love on Jacksonville.” The other depicts a young woman running from 2020 into 2021, declaring, “Curiosity is an act of courage.” The completed pieces are displayed every Saturday at RAM.

The Clearys have been traveling and creating art together for five years. Recently, they decided to re-brand and home in on a niche, focusing exclusively on local large-scale temporary and permanent murals using paint, chalk, and other mediums. Danielle dreams of working with schools.

She wishes for all members of the community to be like the sunflowers on that fence, “to be seen as the beautiful people we are. Shine your light bright. Reach for the sky,” Danielle said.

Give a brief description on what you would like to discuss on the show.: We would like to discuss our desire to create art that inspires hope in the community; hope that each individual can achieve their dreams. We also like to discuss our offerings of permanent and temporary murals as well as our conscious clothing line.

What makes your company unique?: Our company is unnique in the fact that we are a husband and wife team that has created our business to share our love and skills with our community. We are also unique in the fact that our products and services strive to be environmentally responsible and the message of our work are often aligned with creating environmental awareness. We love humanity and want to serve everyone’s highest potential.

How do you define success?: We define success in our ability to inspire people. Our companies success is measured by our ability to inspire people to live their best lives and be their most authentic selves.

What’s your favorite way to get involved in the community?: Our favorite way to get involved is through the creation of live art at events. We have worked with events such as RAM, Color Me Kona, Jax Chamber Annual Meeting, the Gator Bowl, Music and Arts Festivals, and many others. We are inspired to work with good causes and nonprofits. We believe our work is a beautiful way to spread the message about these causes.

What is your biggest marketing challenge in your business: Our biggest challenge is getting in front of people who need our services. This is challenge is compounded by the fact that our clients, due to the nature of murals, often only need our services once or twice.

Tracing the Origins of Murals

Murals are among humanity's oldest art forms, with origins dating back to 30,000 BCE . The earliest known murals were found in France's Chauvet Cave, depicting animals and abstract forms that likely held spiritual or cultural significance. Over millennia, murals have reflected the social, political, and spiritual fabric of civilizations.

Ancient Egypt (3150 BCE) : Intricate wall paintings adorned tombs, telling stories of the afterlife and immortalizing pharaohs and gods.
Pompeii (100 BCE – 79 CE) : Roman frescoes in Pompeii preserved vibrant depictions of daily life, myth, and nature.

The Renaissance: Murals Redefined

The Renaissance ushered in a golden age for murals, with Italian masters elevating the craft to new heights. The technique of fresco painting —applying pigment to wet plaster—allowed for vibrant, enduring works.

Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” : A masterpiece capturing a pivotal biblical moment.
Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Ceiling : Depicting the story of Genesis, this work remains one of humanity's most iconic artistic achievements.

The Mexican Muralism Movement

Jacksonville-based Heartspace Art and Winn-Dixie chalked up a tribute to Duval County teachers in front of the Point Meadows Plaza store Tuesday morning.

With schools opening Thursday, store officials wanted to publicly display their gratitude for local teachers. Enter the art and event production company founded by Ian and Danielle Cleary.

From 7 a.m. to noon, the artistic duo and friend Samantha Clark used dozens of chalk sticks and aerosol chalk spray to draw a huge red apple, a pencil and a message of love to teachers.

Winn-Dixie commissioned the 1,000-square-foot display with something simple and old-school in mind, according to officials. Pieces this size normally cost about $5,000.

Parent company Southeastern Grocers also announced that each of its BI-LO, Fresco y Más, Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie grocery stores will decorate their entrance paths with the creative chalk tributes to teachers as they return to work both in person and virtually during the pandemic crisis.

The grocer also said it will donate about $272,000 in gift cards to school partners throughout the Southeast to help support teachers, staff and students during this unique school year.

Winn-Dixie had also commissioned a chalk mural from Heartspace for Nurses Week.

“We’re grateful for our teachers and think they’ll be our heroes for looking after the children of the future,” said Customer Service Manager Leslie Watkins.

Even though the art is temporary, the message still stands. This piece especially means a lot for the Clearys since Ian was a substitute teacher for Duval County for two years and they have two kids.

“Having kids has been such a drive for me because I want them to believe they can do whatever they want to do,” Danielle Cleary said. “Education is important and should be fun. Art can make it fun.”

Heartspace Art was founded three years ago by the Clearys. What started out as a love for art and human connection turned into a full-time art company. Throughout the years, their style has slowly turned to temporary art as their niche. Besides chalk murals, they also do body paint, illustration and paintings. Their slogan is “Murals with a message.”

“Our whole idea is to be able to share a message,” Danielle Cleary said. “Even if the mural doesn’t have words, we hide little words in our murals to put some positivity and intention into the painting.”

With the mural being drawn on the asphalt outside the store, some customers stood by to chat with the artists and watch their process before grocery shopping.

“It’s a beautiful design,” said Jeffrey Snead, a passing customer. “We need positive faith, family and friends. Teachers are the start of that because without them, our children don’t learn.”

Another said he’s been a teacher for 20 years and appreciated the gesture.

Like much of the country, Jacksonville joined in the nationwide protests in the fight against racial injustice, police brutality and discrimination following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Heartspace Art created a message of hope in Hemming Park Tuesday afternoon. As a creative outlet in light of the current tensions between citizens and law enforcement Ian Cleary and his wife Danielle Cleary who make up HeartSpace Art, working with Valerie Martin chalked the message, “Hope for a positive change” along with an image a blindfolded woman holding the scales of justice on the pavers in front of the now closed skyway stop in Hemming Park on June 2, 2020. “We wanted to do something that wasn’t vandalizing but still could be a message to the community.” said Ian Cleary, “We wanted to promote a movement for positive change.” [Bob Self/Times-Union]

The fires that are causing massive amounts of damage in the West are an essential part of this tree‘s life cycle.
